LOS (United ANOELBS, Oct. News) — The «. — Alntee Semple McPherson preliminary trial took on the aspect of the “two a day." with defense at torneys sad Deputy District At torney Joseph Ryan, engaging in repartee that kept spectators In an uproar most of the day. The debonair Joe'waa the itar of the potential vaudeville team, while Defense Attorney Gilbert acted In a minor role as a “feed er" for Ryan’s witticisms- and sarcastic comment, In which ho continued to brand the kidnaping story a hoax, and added further bits of damaging testimony. Was a t Carmel The young district dttorney in vestigated the Carmel aagle of the case and made a trip to Agua Prieta, the little Mexican village, where the evangelist reappeared after being absent iron, this city for «« days. On the witness stand Tuesday he declared that the slo e s that > the evangelist wore at the time testified that the inner sole of one of the shoes had been torn out since he first saw them Attorney Oete Angry Gilbert flew Into a rage as the smiling Ryan answered each question with a composer but Ir ritating air. 'Mr. Ryan tell me some more about those trips Into the des ert,** Gilbert saM. "All over againT” Ryan asked with a grin. ‘'Yes, and wtthone any wise cracking. Tidings Procures This statement has been questioned in many quarters, and it ia our desire nt this time to set the voters of Ashland right in this regard. ¿»Your general taxes will not be increased- The major proposal on which you will vote specifically specifies that the interest, principal and all expenses , of the water improvement must be paid out of the net receipts of the water department. ‘n. Th*8» °f course, will mean an increase in your water rates. With one or two exceptions, Ashland today has the cheapest water rate of any city of over .3000 ¡teople in Oregon or along the Pacific coast. It is only fair and equitable that the rates lie increased. The bond issue provides that succeeding coun cils cannot change the method of paying off these writer bonds. In other words, if you vote.for this issue the city must pay off the bonds out of the net reciepts. It is our conviction that water is a commodity which must be sold just the shine as food and lights and. any other peceagities. In this respect we believe you will agree with us. And it is (A this theory that we believe the only just and equitable method of paying off this proposed water indebtedness is to hate the water consumers nav it. • -------- » * JUDGES ABE ♦ GHOSH# — — * "T- , -w Plan io Give Ashland Widespread Pnblirit)- b, Annosmreff ' .
